UV Purification & Sterilization
Local municipalities take several steps to make the water supplied to our homes safe. Conversely, due to several reasons (accidents, leakages, storage methods, etc.), this water is not always as pure as it should be for it to be consumed. We are, of course, aware of this predicament and take steps to purify the water we drink. Water purifiers and filters are available to clean our drinking water.

What is ultraviolet water purification?
Just like visible light, UV light is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum. But unlike regular light, we cannot see it. UV light, is however, highly energetic, and capable of destroying living cells. Particularly in the 250-270 nanometer wavelength. This is called germicidal UV light. The water purification process is called ultraviolet germicidal irradiation.
How effective is UV water disinfection?
UV is a known effective disinfectant due to its strong germicidal (inactivating) ability. UV disinfects water containing bacteria and viruses and can be effective against protozoans like Giardia Lamblia cysts (an infection in the small intestine caused by the parasite) or Cryptosporidium oocysts (a parasite that once ingested, exists in the small intestine and result in an infection of intestinal epithelial tissue). UV has been used commercially, especially in Europe, for many years in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, beverage, and electronics industries.
What makes UV Purification Superior to chemical purification?
Chemical purification is the method employed by municipal water suppliers. Adding chlorine is the most common chemical purification method. It is used because of its effectiveness of chlorine’s germicidal properties. But, as we all know, chlorinated water tastes bad and sometimes has an odor. Also, too much chlorine is bad for more than just our olfactory sense. Since chlorine is essentially bleach adding more chemicals to your drinking water on top of the already chemically safe water that comes out of your tap can become hazardous to your health.
How safe is UV purification?
What makes UV purification safe is that it is a physical process and not a chemical one. This highly energetic light either physically kills or destroys the DNA inside living cells causing the cell not to be able to reproduce rendering them ineffective. Germicidal UV light is so effective it can make water sterile (100% germ-free) under controlled conditions. However, such a high degree of purification is practically impossible for household application. This led manufactures to claim 99.99% purification, which is still sufficiently germ-free to make water safe for consumption.
